How to Choose Kids’ Bedroom Furniture That Grows With Your Child

A practical guide to planning a child’s bedroom — sizes, storage, study space and choosing a set that still works in the teenage years.

Buying furniture for a child’s room is different from furnishing any other room. Children grow quickly, their needs change every few years, and the room has to handle sleep, homework, play and storage. Here is how to plan it well the first time.

1. Start with the room measurements

Measure the length and width of the room, the ceiling height, and the position of doors, windows, switches and the AC unit. Wardrobe doors and drawers need space to open, so leave at least 70–90 cm of clear floor in front of them.

2. Choose the bed size for the future

A single bed suits most children up to their teenage years. If the room allows, a slightly larger bed means you will not need to replace it at 13. Beds with storage drawers underneath are useful in smaller rooms.

3. Plan storage before decoration

Most children’s rooms run out of storage long before they run out of floor space. A full-height wardrobe, a bookshelf and a few closed drawers will keep toys, school books and clothes under control. Closed storage keeps the room looking tidy; open shelves are good for books and display.

4. Give homework a proper place

From school age onwards, a study desk becomes essential. Look for a desk at a comfortable height with a shelf or hutch above it, and place it near natural light if you can.

5. Pick a style they will not outgrow too fast

Very theme-heavy furniture can feel babyish within a few years. A neutral base — white, oak, walnut or soft green — lets you change bedding, wall colour and accessories as your child grows, while the furniture stays the same.

6. Think about safety

  • Fix tall wardrobes and bookshelves to the wall so they cannot tip.
  • Choose rounded corners for younger children.
  • Keep heavy items on lower shelves.
